Termites are grouped into types based on their diet, and can often be identified by the type of damage in your home. Subterranean termites eat in a pattern resembling a honeycomb. Drywood termite damage is harder to see. Their presence can usually only be indicated by small fecal pellets.
Other signs of a termite infestation can be mud tubes along the outside of the house or foundation. After the swarm, termites may shed their wings on window sills or in corners.
